"My girlfriend smelt the beer brewing when we visited the church near by. Checked on google maps and realised there was a monastery and brewery here. Decided to visit later on. Think we used the back door to come in, and what a find. This...huge, amazing brewery, good prices and tasty beer. Place was packed. If you can go!"

earlier it was place for the Salzburg citizen only, but meanwhile it became also a tourist attraction. Best is to go on a hot day and to sit underneath the huge chestnut trees ( you might have to search for a free table, but you can also share a table with others if some chairs are free). Don't be shy if the locals are starting taking and asking you from where you come and what you are doing. If temperature is cooler or in winter there are big halls to sit and to share table with others. Beer is normally self serving, just buy a ticket, grab one of the stone mugs and go to the counter where you get it filled up from a barrel. There are also some waiters around and you can order a beer a bit more expensive than self service, but self service I think is also an experience. If your mug is not full, which happens most of the time, just return and get it filled up to the top. They do this without asking. Food you can buy at one of the deli food counters or, if you are good prepared, you can bring your own food, just beer or soft drinks you have to buy there. If you like brewery atmosphere and if you don't need fine dining, it is really a good place to experience, just a 15 minutes walk from the city centre. AND YOU GET THE BEST BEER IN SALZBURG.Opening time is 14:30 till 23.00. If you come by car (there is a big parking place ), don't forget to get your parking ticket stamped when you purchase your beer ticket, which gives you a few hours free parking.

Only a small sign, and a deserted hallway behind the front door will lead you to believe you're in the wrong place. But don't be deceived! You're entering a huge beer garden, and one of my favorite places. Food is cheap and good (I love the leberkase - sold by the kg) but you come for the beer and the atmosphere. You pay for a half or full liter, grab a stein from the shelves on the wall, wash it, and show your receipt to the Biermeister. He'll fill 'er up and you're on your way to a shared table under the chestnut trees. Can't be beat during a warm summer evening amidst the many "prosits". If you're in Salzburg make a point to visit.

Went with my wife for a beer and lunch. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The beer was also great. We did have some trouble with the gentleman that poured it. This is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. The 1litre beers we ordered came full of about 250mls of foam. When I went back to the line to ask them to please fill it more (as I paid for a litre) I was given some attitude, then had the requested top up dumped into the stein so as to cause a foam overflow that lasted several seconds at least. Other than this hiccups, it was a great lunch experience and I highly recommend.

After all the posh Mozart stuff and fine churches you need real Austrian culture ... big jugs of beer and crisp pork ... right?Augustiner Bräustübl is a huge beer garden crowded with happy people. Get your clay jug down stairs in the garden and at the same time pay for the beer. That's step 1.Step 2 is to find a table - either in the garden outside or in the nice big rooms upstairs.Step 3 - find your favorite food among the several food stalls. Warning: It's not for vegetarians!Surprise, surprise - it's quite a cheap treat considering the quality.
