It was our first dinner on a trip to Wachau. We stayed at Spitz for a week and on the day of arrival needed something close. With 2 small kids, Strandcafe with kids-corner was easy choice.We are going o Austria quite often, mostly Vienna and Salzburg area in winter, but the first look into menu showed the prices are set at higher average here (and it was our experience with other restaurants as well, where however the quality was much better).Maybe because we choose the less expensive food, which was tasty, but nothing special. I do not want to make it general statement based on one visit therefore. The service was good, the view at the Danube nice and that´s it. There is also nice local gourmand shop, offering various local specialities (also high-end brands mostly).
My family took me on a trip through the Wachau and were we lucky the sun shone he sky was blue and the Danube was almost due. After lunch we walked by the Danube and felt we needed a coffee and a rest and we went up on to the veranda of the Strand Café, we were lucky and had a very good and comfortable table and had coffee and the most delicious home made cakes the one in my eyes was the best for me was an Apricot Tart with Meringue on the top. The place was very busy and the waitresses managed very well and were helpful to move tables so people got the most sunshine.A very pleasant and relaxing hour spent and a good snack to make it even better, they also served cooked food
This was our halfway stop for lunch between Melk and Krems, the restaurant has beautiful views of the water and a friendly and efficient wait staff. We were not adventurous with our choices, the standard schnitzels, which were tasty and a zucchini cordon bleu which was a little too greasy, but a large delicious portion nonetheless. Before entering the upstairs outdoor terrace there is a case of cakes on display, they all looked fantastic.
The location is nice, the service was average, but with smile, despite the fully packed place with tourist. The bad site of our visit was the food and the small portions of it, you can try it, but as my experience tells me, it is just another tourist trap ;)
