We sat outside in the courtyard, and that was a very charming and romantic setting. We had to move, however, because it turns out the restaurant designated one corner of the courtyard as the place for people to stand around and smoke. It was weird having people more or less standing around our table, chatting and smoking away.We had been wine tasting in France and bought more wine than we could carry back to the US, so we wanted to first drink our own bottle before moving on to the restaurant's selections. They told us the corkage would be CFH30. I know BYOB is not common practice in Europe, but that is pretty crazy! The food was good, and the asparagus soup was the best I have ever tasted. The service was average. I had read in some reviews about being charged for tap water, but thankfully we were not. I would go back.
It was great to get immediate seating after arriving on a Saturday evening without a booking. However arriving early likely helped with this. A broad menu gave lots of choices and what arrived were all delicious. Accompanied by a bottle of red Swiss wine. Finishing with a coffee and cappuccino, it was a relaxing occasion. We were lucky to have such a helpful staff looking after us. Not only was the service exemplary but he also passed on advice on Swiss food specialities.
One of the best restaurants in Basel, I especially enjoy their Wienerschnitzel which is the closest thing to the authentic Viennese dish you can find around these parts. Nice wine selection as well and friendly and attentive service. The ambiance also adds to the experience. Like all fine restaurants in basel, expect the price tag to go with it, however the price/value relationship is ok.
Booked a brunch there as I saw gorgeous looking things on Instagram should have known it was only a lure. The waiter got our simple order wrong 3 times and kept pushing a buffer brunch on top of what we ordered. Not at all impressed. The food was ok. Eggs Benedict were swimming in the sauce. Won't return. On a side note, the manager/supervisor was very nice and accommodating.
