I invited my family to the restaurant to celebrate my PhD defense. The location and atmosphere are nice, all the rest is truly terrible. I am allergic to milk and eggs. I thus asked if it is possible to have a dish that I could eat, as is the most normal thing in 2017. Apparently to keep the traditional atmosphere, also the rest did not evolve. It seemed that the chef felt offended by my needs, as if I was questioning his recipes. Besides this, the overall food quality is average but prices are like a five star restaurant. Vegetarian options are really limited, and avoid the desserts: for a couple of minuscule chocolate balls we paid like a main course. There are so many cheaper, less arrogant, friendly and traditional alternatives in Zurich...
the food was good and the historic house is truly beautiful but the waiter is overpowering the experience with rather displaced jokes... yes - of course it's nice to have a laugh but there is a line which when is crossed makes for an awkward dining experience.Also, we had to have our coffee in the hallway as int he wine stube there is only wine served - also, our friend did not get a beer which was rather strange as the dinner costs a lot of money. Unfortunately, we can not recommend it. There are enough other beautiful houses in Zurich, with nice staff and a comfortable welcoming atmosphere, good food, who do not alienate guests.
We asked if it was possible to have a dish without milk or eggs (I am allergic), and the waiter looked at us as if we were offending the chef. I understand the charm of old times, but we are in 2017 and allergy problems are something a restaurant should be able to deal with. The quality of food is good, but nothing so spectacular as to justify such high prices. Avoid by any means the desserts, e.g. 4 chocolate small balls and a little bit of ice-cream for 20 chf. I will never go back, and rather spend (less) money in more authentic restaurants where simple alimentary requests are welcome.
Friendly staff managed to find us a table despite the fact we hadn't booked. Given the fact that the restaurant was packed I think we were quite lucky! Two or three big parties meant that the atmosphere was quite 'lively' but service was still attentive. Food excellent although price more at the upper end of mid-range.
Our local friend insisted that we go to this tavern in Zurich, saying it was something not to miss and he was absolutely right! This is a beautiful, old tavern (one of the oldest in Zurich) with extremely friendly staff and so charming. We tasted delicious wine and had great coffee! I can definitely recommend Oepfelchammer even if it is just for a quick visit like we did on our morning city tour of Zurich. I absolutely loved it!
It was my first visit here , I have family who live here and insisted that we must call in for a drinkI absolutely loved it , it is very old with such warmth and charmThe service is excellent It's definitely somewhere I will visit again If in Old town Zurich , call in .... it's a Must
We spent another very nice evening in this place and enjoyed food, the "very special" service and the opportunity to experience both the Swiss and other culture interacting with each other. Food is very authentic and delicious and the wine list provides - although sometimes a little pricy - with a great selection of local Swiss wines. A Must-Go in Zurich … especially when you request a table in "Der alten Stube".
I've visited this tavern with my friend from Zurich. He booked this place since it's known as one of the oldest tavern in Zurich and also for its great seasonal menu. The place also with the service is really old style where you feel like a few decades ago. I really like the atmosphere and I have to say it was delicious! Really great local food with which you really felt like the autumn is already coming.
