Went here based on the recommendation of our hotel concierge. Each recommendation was a success, except this restaurant. We arrived and were seated a few minutes before our reservation time and were given menus. We had several issues. First of all, they have live piano play after 6pm (I think) each night, and apparently, if you are seated in certain parts of the restaurant, you are charged an extra live entertainment tax of 2.25 or 2.5 euro a person, on top of the "cover" of about 3 euro a person that many higher end restaurants in Vienna charge. Of course, we magically got sat in the live entertainment section, which I find kind of insulting since you get sat before you would even know there is an extra charge for that (it is on the menu). So, you can either ask for another table, which is the place is busy, you won't get, or just pay the extra charge that you would not expect until you are seated. Now, the cover ostensibly in most places is supposedly to cover bread and the cutlery and table setting (a "tradition" that is frankly absurd and they continue to get away with in Vienna because many places do it). So, the waiter brings a basket of bread pieces, and asks what piece we want. 3 euro a person cover, and I get to select a PIECE of 2 inch wide bread? Absurd. I asked him for a piece of all 3 and he seemed a little astonished, but complied. It took about 10 minutes to get my soup (which was a cold pepper soup). Another waiter comes and asks if we want any wine, and drops a wine list. We told him no, and he was visibly irritated as he took the menu and walked off. From there, we waited another 45 minutes to see our entrees. We sat with an empty bottle of water on the table for over 30 minutes, and just sat staring at the wall until our entrees arrived. From when we sat down until we received our entrees was 61 minutes. Bordering on ludicrous frankly. About 5 minutes before they arrived finally, the waiter comes and says that "the food is coming. 3 minutes." No apology, no "hey this is why it took so long," nothing. If you forgot to put them in, say so, if you did it on purpose, well, I guess don't say so. When they brought the entrees, the same waiter asked again if we wanted wine, and when we said we wanted another bottle of water, he just said "ok" and ran off again, clearly irritated again. We never saw any more water for the evening, including the water we asked for. Now, the ONLY reason this place does not get 1 star, is that the entrees were pretty good. My wife really enjoyed her fish, and said it was very good. My veal was frankly, too salty, but otherwise was good. We would have normally ordered dessert and such, but at the point we finished our entrees, it was already well past an hour and a half, and frankly I did not want to spend any more time in that place. We saw two other tables that sat around the same time as us, and had entire meals with dessert (one even had a special birthday cake) and paid and left before we got to finishing our entrees.I asked for the bill and told them I wanted to use my card because I wanted to expedite the matter (expecting they would bring the card machine to the table as everywhere in Europe does). Instead, they took my card off to charge it, which I have NEVER experienced in Europe. The piano player, who happened to be RIGHT next to where they sat us, could see we were furious, as I noticed a few times he glanced nervously over at us while we were fuming. Overall, I do not know if they expected us to not order anything or be worth their time since we did not order wine (a very incorrect assumption if so), or what the problem was, but the entire thing was terrible. The irony was, that due to the service and treatment, in the end, that was self fulfilling, because we skipped dessert and after dinner items because we just wanted to leave. The cover charge and the piano tax together accounted for almost 20% of the bill, which is frankly ridiculous. The food was good (mine pretty good, my wife's was excellent by her measure) but that was all. A complete failure in every other way. The concierge at the hotel was mortified when we told him and seemed personally bothered that we had such a bad experience. All told though, the other recommendations he gave us all turned out well, and I will get around to reviewing those in the next few days.
