We were guests at the Casa Gangotena, a Relais Chateau hotel. So for the first 1st night in Quito, I booked at their restaurant. A beautifully appointed small dining room, with very high ceilings, linen table cloths, and a very inventive and highly varied small menu. I was not particularly hungry altitude? so I ordered small plates— Ecuadorian empanadas 3, one pork,, one chicken, and one cheese served with 2 perfect dipping sauces excellent, eggplant marinated in Cabernet Sauvignon served with a vegetable purée and a potato dish that tasted like risotto. Delicious, and the eggplant went perfectly with the Cab they had on their by the glass wine menu. For dessert I ordered the Lemon Verbena creme brûlée. Fantastic, but enough to serve at least 2 3 people. The wine list is nice with nice selections from Spain and Chile and Argentina, but I would have liked more Ecuadorean wines, by the glass, especially since a full bottle would have been way too much for a single diner If I am ever in Quito again, I would book the Restaurant at the Casa Gangotena in a heart beat.
