The salad buffet is a dream, many vegetarian and even vegan choices. Not cheap and not easy to get to (15 - minute drive up a steep curvy road) but well worth the effort, The restaurant is part of a hotel, but since we live in the area we have never stayed there.
We visit Forsthofalm a number of timers every year. Please note that this is the cabin in Saalfelden and not the one at Leogang. The views are just magic and Hilda is a very pleasant host. They don't serve your beer very cold but this is only a minor inconvenience. The cake and the platters they offer are great.
We got the name of this alm at the Tourist Information Office in Maria Alm. We found it by turning off the southbound 311 just outside Saalfelden at a signpost to Biberg. We drove up the road which turned into a track and then turned off left at a sign to Forsthofalm. It is at a height of 1120 metres. We parked at the side of the building and entered what looked liked a barn. We were greeted by the owner and shown into the dining area consisting of two ten seater tables and a table for two and an old fashioned range. We joined four others and were introduced to Späkasbrot, a deep fried pancake eaten with cranberry jam. We had cheese dumpling soup and pork and sauerkraut followed by the specialty pancakes. The meaI was delicious. We drank Radler and Weissbeer, ending with a coffee. Unfortunately it is only open between May and the end of October. The meal cost us 15 euros.
Das Salatbuffet ist ein Traum, viele vegetarische und sogar vegane Möglichkeiten. Nicht billig und nicht leicht zu erreichen (15 Minuten Fahrt über eine steile Kurvige-Straße), aber die Mühe lohnt sich, das Restaurant ist Teil eines Hotels, aber da wir in der Gegend wohnen, haben wir nie dort übernachtet.
Wir besuchen die Forsthofalm jedes Jahr mehrmals. Bitte beachten Sie, dass es sich hierbei um die Hütte in Saalfelden und nicht um die in Leogang handelt. Die Aussicht ist einfach magisch und Hilda ist eine sehr angenehme Gastgeberin. Sie servieren Ihr Bier nicht sehr kalt, aber das ist nur eine kleine Unannehmlichkeit.
